At Peases West Primary School we want children to be confident, successful learners. Learning to read is a high priority at our school because it opens up whole new worlds and provides opportunities to be independent.
Children from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2 take part in daily phonic and spelling sessions which last for approximately twenty minutes. These sessions are designed to be fun, fast, and focused where children learn new sounds, work on letter formation, read high frequency words and apply this to their spelling and reading.
Reading is also encouraged through daily reading sessions where children are encouraged to read for pleasure independently and to adults using the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme for younger children and the Accelerated Reading programme for older children. Children are encouraged to read at home every night with a book from school for at least 10 minutes.
We also carry out informal parent/carer workshops throughout the school year to help you to support your child with reading and spelling.
Phonics Workshop
We had a fantastic turnout to our Phonics sessions. Staff in each Phase gave an overview of the learning that is covered and pupils demonstrated some example activities. Resources from the session can be downloaded from the link below.
